15 JUNE is Edvard Grieg's Birthday

Edvard Grieg was a Norwegian composer and pianist. Grieg received piano lessons from his mother from six, an excellent pianist.

Grieg used and developed Norwegian folk music in his compositions, paving the way for Norway's music to achieve international consciousness. Grieg's works also helped Norway develop a national identity.

In the Hall of the Mountain King   

In the Hall of the Mountain King is loved by children worldwide. It is a musical depiction of a young boy, Peer Gynt, being chased by trolls during his escape from the home of the Mountain King.

Have your students listen to these two versions of the piece and complete a compare and contrast activity.

17 JUNE is Igor Stravinsky's Birthday

Igor Stravinsky was a Russian-born composer, pianist, and conductor. Stravinsky's compositional career was notable for its stylistic diversity. His work revolutionized musical thought and sensibility in the 20th century.

For instance, Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring presented a new concept of music involving constantly changing rhythms and metric imbalances, a brilliantly original orchestration, and drastically dissonant harmonies.

20 JUNE is Lionel Richie's Birthday

Lionel Richie is an American singer, songwriter, and producer commended for his ability to successfully manoeuvre across more than one genre of music in his prolific career.

He has performed—and skillfully blended—multiple musical styles, most notably funk, soul, rhythm and blues, and country. Richie has sold over 90 million records worldwide, making him one of the world's best-selling artists of all time.

25 JUNE is Carly Simon's Birthday

Carly Simon is an American singer-songwriter, musician, and children's author. Simon had a series of hit albums and singles—primarily romantic ballads sung in her plaintive alto—that included "That's the Way I've Always Heard It Should Be" (1971) and "Anticipation" (1971). She was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1994.

25 JUNE is Global Beatles Day

This occasion pays tribute to The Beatles and their impact on music history and pop culture. The holiday was created and first celebrated in 2009 by Beatles fan Faith Cohen, who calls it "a thank you or love letter to The Beatles."
